Tensions In Rajasthan’s Tonk

Meanwhile, in Tonk, Rajasthan, tensions flared after the arrest of Independent MLA candidate Naresh Meena, who had slapped Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary during the by-elections to the Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency. The incident occurred on 13th November, when Meena, a rebel Congress leader contesting as an Independent, slapped the SDM while he was on election duty. Meena was later arrested on Thursday, following the violent aftermath of the incident.

Tonk District Collector Soumya Jha told news agency PTI, “The SDM filed an FIR after the assault, but we did not disturb the candidate. After the polls ended and the polling party was leaving, the candidate tried to stop them. That’s when the police intervened. The police attempted to resolve the situation, but the candidate initiated an assault.” Jha also confirmed that disturbances had followed the incident, with some of Meena’s supporters causing unrest in various areas. However, she assured that the situation was now under control.

Following the arrest, members of the Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS) Association, who had been on strike for two days in protest, met Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Friday. The association’s general secretary, Neetu Rajeshwar, stated that a decision regarding the end of the strike would be made at the association’s meeting. The strike was a demand for Meena’s arrest.

Violence continued on the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur highway, with about 60 two-wheelers and 18 four-wheelers being torched, and police vehicles pelted with stones. The police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd on Wednesday, which had gathered following the attack on the SDM. Meena had reportedly slapped the SDM after he attempted to get more people to vote, despite local villagers boycotting the elections. They had demanded that Samravta village be included in the Uniara sub-division, as Uniara was the nearest location. Meena had been supporting the villagers’ cause.
