A case of alleged misbehaviour with a resident doctor has come to light in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. This incident happened on Sunday night when a patient was admitted to the Sports Injury Centre and her husband, who is an IPS officer by profession, allegedly misbehaved with the resident doctor while getting treatment. There has been anger among the resident doctors since this matter came to light. A CCTV video of the incident is now viral.
According to the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, the surgery postgraduate resident had to face verbal harassment and threats during duty. Bharani Kumar, president of the RDA, said that this incident happened on the night of November 24, when the resident doctor on duty was attending to a patient on a general surgery reference call in the New SIC building.

The patient, Anita Roy was admitted on the seventh floor of the SIC building, she was accompanied by her husband Brijendra Kumar Yadav, who is an IPS officer by profession. When the resident doctor asked the patient about her health, the patient allegedly did not respond properly and behaved badly. After that, her husband, too, behaved very rudely and insulted the doctor, Bharani said. It is still not clear what sparked Yadav’s outrage.
The news of the incident reached the rest of the doctors of the hospital between 3 AM and 6 AM on Monday. After that, the resident doctors suspended service in the emergency ward for about 2 hours. Later, all the resident doctors went to their duty.
On Monday, the Resident Doctors’ Association wrote a letter on the matter and demanded action from the hospital administration and officials. “IPS officer Bijendra Kumar Yadav, as the patient’s attendant, should apologise for the misbehaviour he has shown with the resident doctor,” the letter read. Resident doctors demand that he take responsibility for the incident and prevent such incidents in future. Restore the safety and respect of health professionals within the hospital premises. The resident doctor has also informed the hospital administration about the incident.
Safdarjung Resident Doctors’ Association and the resident doctor with whom this incident happened are being backed by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA). A letter has been issued by FAIMA saying: “We treat every patient equally. Then why can’t every patient behave like a patient? FAIMA says that it strongly condemns the growing VIP culture in government hospitals. If this can happen in Delhi, it can happen anywhere.”
When we treat every patient equally, why cant every patient behave like a patient. #FAIMA strongly condemns the increasing VIP culture in govt. Hospitals.
If this can happen in Delhi,it can happen anywhere.
