Cyclone Fengal Forces Chennai Airport To Suspend Operations — Details


In view of Cyclone Fengal making landfall between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Chennai Airport has been temporarily shut till 7 PM of Saturday. The passengers have been advised to check with respective airlines regarding their flights. From Saturday, several aircraft hovered over Chennai due to adverse weather, with some being diverted back to their origin to prevent untoward incidents.

According to ANI, Airport authorities, “Chennai Airport has temporarily shut its operations till 7 pm today as heavy rainfall and strong winds intensified ahead of Cyclone Fengal’s expected landfall.”

Taking to X, Chennai Airport said, “In light of Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ and the forecasted high crosswinds, as predicted by IMD, Chennai Airport operations will be suspended from 1230 hrs to 1900 hrs on 30.11.2024 (Today) following safety concerns raised by stakeholder airlines.”

The Chennai Airport released a list of 22 flights canceled on Saturday due to the inclement weather. Earlier, IndiGo Airlines temporarily suspended all arrivals and departures at the airport, citing crew and passenger safety as the top priority.

The IMD stated that Cyclone Fengal is expected to move westward and cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry as a cyclonic storm, with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, by the evening of November 30.
