Delhi Court Grants 7-Day Bail To Umar Khalid In Delhi Riots Case For Attending Family Marriage

A Delhi court has granted interim bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. The bail has been granted for 7 days for attending a marriage in the family.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Court granted bail to the student leader for 7 days for attending a wedding in the family, Live Law reported.

“Considering the fact that the applicant wishes to attend the marriage of his first cousin and meet his relatives, the court deems it just and appropriate to grant him the desired relief,” the judge ordered. Khalid was also directed to furnish a personal bond of Rs 20,000 along with two sureties of the same amount.

Khalid is currently in Judicial Custody in connection with a larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 North East Delhi Violence. The court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid from December 28 to January 3.

The court has also directed him not to use social media or contact any witnesses or any person in connection with the case as part of the bail condition. It also said that during the bail time, he should only meet his family members, relatives and friends and should remain at his house or at the place where the marriage ceremonies and functions are to be held, according to Bar and Bench.

He was denied bail in October 2022 by the Delhi High Court in the Delhi riots case. He then approached the Supreme Court, but later withdrew his Special Leave Petition (SLP). Umar Khalid filed a second regular bail plea in the trial court which was rejected earlier this year, the report said.

Apart from Umar, several others, including Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam and Natasha Narwal have been made accused in the case.
