Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during his Cabinet Briefing on Monday announced plans to introduce PAN 2.0, touted as an upgrade to Permanent Account Number (PAN), the unique taxpayer identification number. According to Vaishnaw, PAN 2.0 will be an advanced iteration of the country’s PAN system, aimed at streamlining business and citizen-centric operations.

PAN has been in use since 1972 under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, and has seen widespread adoption, with 78 crore PANs issued, covering 98 per cent of individuals, Vaishnaw said.

What Benefits Will PAN 2.0 Bring To Citizens?

The revamped system is hailed as a seamless, technology-driven, paperless experience, aligning with the Modi Government’s Digital India initiative. Citizens can also expect:

  • Unified identification through the Common Business Identifier.
  • An efficient grievance redressal mechanism powered by advanced tech solutions.

When Will PAN 2.0 Roll Out?

There is no word yet on when the revamped PAN 2.0 system will become effective. 

Do You Need To Change Your PAN Number?

Vaishnaw said that citizens will not need to change their PAN number. PAN 2.0 will come as an upgrade to the existing PAN system. 

The new card, as per Vaishnaw, will come with a QR code for quick scans and will be “fully online”.

Yes, Vaishnaw assured that the upgrade to PAN 2.0 will be implemented free of cost.
