‘Don’t Show BJP People Your Voter ID’

Delhi Election 2025: In a sharp attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal alleged a conspiracy to disenfranchise Purvanchali voters in Delhi ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Blaming remarks by BJP national president JP Nadda, Kejriwal accused the BJP of orchestrating a campaign to delete the names of Purvanchalis from the voter list.

“Couple of days ago, BJP national president JP Nadda made objectionable remarks for the people of Purvanchal in the House. He compared the people of Purvanchal who live in Delhi with illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingyas, and said that the BJP is getting names of people of Purvanchal deleted [from voter list],” Kejriwal said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Condemning the remarks, Kejriwal added, “BJP national president JP Nadda has openly accepted in the Parliament that BJP workers are getting the names of people of Purvanchal, and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingyas deleted [from voter list]. We condemn this; it is a conspiracy against the people of Purvanchal. On one hand, they are being compared with Rohingyas… How can people who have come to Delhi from UP and Bihar be compared with Rohingyas and Bangladeshis?”

Addressing the Purvanchali community, Kejriwal urged them to remain cautious. “I want to tell people of Purvanchal that we won’t let anyone’s name get cut. We respect you, and we will give [you] a respectful life. If BJP people come to your house, don’t tell them your name and don’t show your voter ID card. Don’t keep any contact with BJP; they might be asking for details from you to cut your name. AAP will go to every Purvanchal person’s home and show this video of Nadda, and will explain how BJP is hatching a conspiracy against Purvanchal people staying in Delhi,” he asserted, as quoted by news agency ANI.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh echoed the concerns, stating, “We people of UP, Bihar and Purvanchal have been staying in Delhi for the last 30-40 years… are they Rohingyas and Bangladeshis? The insult BJP has done in the Parliament, to avenge it, every Purvanchal person is ready. I will take out a yatra and go to every constituency where brothers, sisters, mothers and elders of Purvanchal are staying and will show them the video of what Nadda said. We will [make] people aware of the actual mentality of BJP.”

Adding to the criticism, AAP leader Avadh Ojha remarked, “BJP national president JP Nadda has compared us [people of Purvanchal] with Rohingyas. I can see the conspiracy behind this… People of Purvanchal now know about the development that is being done here, and many of them are also planning to shift to Delhi.”

The Delhi Assembly elections are expected in February, following AAP’s landslide victories in 2015 and 2020, where it won 67 and 62 seats, respectively. The BJP, which has been out of power in Delhi since 1998, is intensifying its efforts to challenge AAP. Polling dates are anticipated to be announced in mid-January, with voting likely post-10 February.
