Hyundai Motor India To Focus On CNG Vehicles Amidst Rising Demand

Hyundai Motor India Ltd plans to focus on CNG fuel option going ahead in order to cater to the increasing demand across rural and urban markets in the country. The automaker intends to focus on sales of models equipped with the CNG technology, a senior official at the firm said.

Currently, Hyundai Motor provides CNG option in three models, namely, the Grand i10 NIOS, AURA, and Exter. The company has recorded a rise in contribution of CNG models to its domestic sales from 9.1 per cent in the 2021-22 financial year (FY22) to 11.4 per cent in the 2023-24 fiscal year (FY24), reported PTI.

In the April-October period in the current fiscal year, the CNG vehicles accounted for 12.8 per cent of the overall domestic sales of the firm. During the period, the vehicle sales across fuel options touched 3.54 lakh units in the domestic market.

India has more than 7,000 CNG stations and plans to have nearly 17,500 stations by the end of 2030, noted Tarun Garg, whole time director and COO at Hyundai Motor India.

This, he added, will boost demand for the technology further. As such, the company launched the ‘Hy-CNG Duo’ technology which features a dual cylinder system providing sufficient boot space and higher fuel efficiency in its Exter and Grand i10 NIOS models.

“The introduction of Hy-CNG Duo is aimed to meet customer demands of providing ample space with high mileage and safety. This has helped us achieve the highest ever CNG penetration of 14.9 per cent in October 2024.Company-fitted CNG system with three years warranty assures maximum assurance for customers,” Garg said.

In October itself, the automaker reported domestic sales of 8,261 units of CNG models. The firm noted that it logged an increase in the penetration of CNG models from 8.8 per cent in FY22 to 10.7 per cent in FY24 in the urban regions, while the same rose from 7.1 per cent in FY22 to 12 per cent in FY24 in rural areas.
