Mumbai Navy Vessel Crash Driver Booked For Speedboat Crash That Killed 13


The police have registered an FIR against the driver of the Navy speedboat that lost control and crashed into a passenger ferry killing 13 people off the coast of Mumbai. 

The FIR against the driver has been registered by Colaba police under relevant sections of the new criminal code BNS based on the complaint of a survivor Natharam Chaudhary from Mumbai’s Sakinaka, reported PTI. 

The sections of the BNS invoked in the FIR included those relating to causing death by negligence actions that endanger the personal safety or life of others, rash or negligent navigation of a vessel and acts of mischief that cause wrongful loss or damage to individuals or the public.

13 passengers were killed in the crash that took place at around 4 pm on Wednesday after a Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with the passenger ferry Neel Kamal off Karanja near Mumbai, the Navy said in a statement. 

The civilian boat was ferrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination. 

Among the deceased were seven men, four women, and two children, according to Mumbai police. Naval personnel and two from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) on board the Naval craft, were also killed in the crash, said the Navy.

Late in the night on Wednesday, the police released the names of ten deceased who were identified: 1) Mahendra Singh Shekhawat (Navy); 2) Praveen Sharma (worker on NAD boat); 3) Mangesh (worker on NAD boat); 4) Mohammad Rehan Qureshi (passenger boat); 5) Rakesh Nanaji Ahire (passenger Boat); 6) Safiana Pathan; 7) Mahi Pawara (aged 3); 8) Akshata Rakesh Ahire; 9) Mithu Rakesh Ahire (aged 8) and 10) Deepak V.

Two women and a male victim were yet to be identified, according to the police.
