A former researcher at OpenAI and whistleblower, Suchir Balaji, passed away last month at his San Francisco flat, reigniting discussions about ethical challenges surrounding AI. The 26-year-old reportedly played a key role in shaping ChatGPT. However, he made headlines for his growing concerns about the moral implications of AI technology. He opposed AI’s use of copyrighted works without permission. He worked at the Microsoft-backed organisation for four years where he contributed significantly to the data collection and organisation efforts that powered ChatGPT’s development.
Tragically, the India-born researcher was found deceased in his San Francisco apartment, with the medical examiner ruling his death as a suicide. According to reports, San Francisco police said, “Officers and medics arrived on scene and located a deceased adult male from what appeared to be a suicide. No evidence of foul play was found during the initial investigation.”

In addition to his academic achievements, Balaji earned a $100,000 award for winning Kaggle’s TSA-sponsored “Passenger Screening Algorithm Challenge.” Before his tenure at OpenAI, he gathered valuable experience at companies such as Scale AI, Helia, and Quora, NDTV reported.

He further added, “I initially didn’t know much about copyright, fair use, etc. but became curious after seeing all the lawsuits filed against GenAI companies. When I tried to understand the issue better, I eventually came to the conclusion that fair use seems like a pretty implausible defence for a lot of generative AI products, for the basic reason that they can create substitutes that compete with the data they’re trained on.”
His claims have been central to several lawsuits filed against OpenAI by authors, developers, and journalists, who allege that their copyrighted works were used without permission, significantly aiding the company’s AI development.
